Wastewater Recycling Treatment Process-Application

The scale of wastewater treatment plants can be quite large, covering hundreds of acres of land geographically. These plants encompass multiple different process areas, including screening grids, sedimentation tanks, multiple clarifiers, aeration tanks, biological solids, and disinfection units. After treatment, the water can be used for replenishing groundwater, irrigation, or further treatment at water purification plants for human use.

The control and management of this water is a complex task that requires thousands of measurement devices to continuously provide data to different locations. Due to the large number of devices that comply with IEEE standards, Ethernet is used as the communication standard in the plant site. A reliable Ethernet network is required within the wastewater treatment plant to receive and provide continuous and accurate data. All steps of the water treatment process require equipment redundancy. The communication network should also be designed with redundancy, utilizing redundant network topologies such as STP, RSTP, or ERPS G.8032 standards.

Adopting an Ethernet network can provide efficient data collection and management infrastructure for wastewater treatment plants, enabling seamless upgrades and future expansions required by the ever-evolving urban areas. High-speed fiber optic backbone networks can help utility companies collect data from remote locations within the treatment plant without being affected by the electrical noise generated by the large equipment and power generation in the plant site.

As wastewater treatment plants are continuously upgraded, there may still be serial communication devices or measurement devices that require serial connections in use. Serial device servers can be used to convert this serial data to Ethernet data, allowing the plant to continue using its old equipment while still being connected to the network.
